Mardi Gras Mask

Mardi Gras Mask

The Maryland Federation of Art has a fun little fund raiser for Mardi Gras.  At the party on February 13th people will be able to bid on the submitted masks.  The party is from 6-8; this short period of time does not allow for much debauched behavior in Mardi Gras form, but I guess that isn’t the point.

Regardless of the lack of depravity, I have made a mask and donated it on Sunday.  I intend to make a couple more just for fun, that way there will be masks for me and the friends I hope to drag along with me.

The mask is a standard Venetian style mask that I have covered in my usual style and features a 1937 New Orleans Times-Picayune as well as the usual unique papers that I use in my collages.

Saturday was a fantastic day because the Muddy Creek Artist’s Guild had our retreat to help us redefine the goals and direction for the guild.  Everyone in the guild is so nice to me and incredibly supportive of my work.  After almost every interaction with them I feel like a celebrity.  It makes it hard to want to make any efforts outside of this safe circle.

However, I will since I am getting ever closer to being ready for my upcoming show.  Sunday, Best Friend Jim came over and helped me build frames for my newest art work.  I’m cruising right along now.  He cut the wood while I glued and nailed.  I was also able to finish the frame of his Koi so it is no longer living with me since he took it home with him.  It will be missed but in its place now resides the peacock that is almost ready to go off to my sister’s house.  What will I hang there after that?  Nothing that I made, otherwise I might get too attached to enter it in the show; which is what has happened with One Tree – Sad Plight.  That piece now hangs in a prime location across from the fireplace underneath the fantastic, stained glass wall sconce I got from the guild show.

Jim also helped by getting photos of the mask before it left to be donated at the MFA.

I’m not too savvy with the inserting of photos into my blog yet.  I’m also not a big fan of having my picture taken which is why most of the pictures have me not looking at the camera.  But in an effort to be brave, I have included a couple shots where I am looking right at you!

And remember, you could be the owner of this mask if you attend the party at the Maryland Federation of Art’s Mardi Gras party on Sunday, February 13th in downtown Annapolis from 6-8pm!

    These look great Susan.
You need to make a bunch more of them and include them at the shows that you’ll be doing.
